Our 8 answers to your home insurance questions
Does shopping around for home insurance sometimes make you nervous? Rest assured, that’s perfectly normal.
Keep reading for our answers to 8 frequently asked questions.
1. Do I have the right coverage?
Home insurance coverage is more than just about price. The right coverage is just as, if not more, important!
The best way to make sure you’re adequately covered is to talk to our team when you submit your quote. Together, you'll find the coverage that's right for you. It all starts with the basic contract, which includes protection for bicycles. Regardless of how many you own and how much they’re worth, they're covered.
The first step is to estimate the value of your property. This is very useful in determining the coverage amount you need to replace your belongings in the event of damage.
Then, use that information to compare the prices of similar quotes.
2. Can I choose my coverage?
Of course! Plus, our home insurance is one of the most customizable on the market.
In many cases, you can increase the maximum amount to cover certain high-value items like:
- jewellery
- personal collections
- musical instruments
Plus, depending on where you live, you might want comprehensive protection against water damage caused by sewer backup, abundant rain or groundwater.
3. Does my home insurance cover everything?
Your home insurance covers a lot. However, there are exclusions and limitations.
Examples?
- Swimming pools and spas are not included in a basic policy. You must take out an endorsement to cover them.
- Flooding is not covered by a basic policy either. When eligible, you may be able to add an endorsement to protect against it.
- Basic insurance covers damage caused by fire, explosion or smoke damage after an earthquake. However, to insure your home against actual earthquakes, you need to add a specific endorsement.
The best way to find out about the exclusions and limitations of your contract (as well as what’s included) is to read it carefully or, better yet, call us.
4. Am I paying too much?
That’s a legitimate question, especially in a period of inflation! Our team considers many factors when calculating a fair insurance premium.
When requesting a home insurance quote, you may be entitled to discounts when:
- you bundle your car and home insurance
- you’re a member of a professional order or association
5. How is the customer service?
At Beneva, you can count on us for personalized, attentive service. Putting people first has always been our purpose.
Our team is at your service, so contact us.
6. What happens when I make a claim?
We'll be with you every step of the way, from the moment you call us to your reimbursement. If you have questions, we'll answer them.
Here are the 4 steps:
- Claiming: call us to give us all the details about the claim.
- Analysis: we’ll make sure that the damage is covered so we can process your claim.
- Damage assessment: our team will estimate the cost to repair or replace all damaged property (when eligible).
- Reimbursement: the most pleasant step (I think we can agree on that).
7. Will my premium increase at renewal?
That's the first question everybody asks themselves when they receive their home insurance renewal documents.
Here are a few tips to help you keep your home insurance rates from going up:
- Increase the amount of your deductible.
- Review your coverage with our team.
- Make an inventory of your belongings, and make sure it’s up to date.
- Let us know when something changes in the past year:
- finished basement
- renovations to your home
- mortgage is paid off
- installation of an alarm system connected to a central station
- etc.
