How to update my child’s student status

As long as your child is a full-time student and meets certain conditions outlined in your contract, they may be covered by your insurance plan. You need to update their student status depending on their situation.

Not sure what to do? We’ll explain it all in detail.

Steps to take

Enter the group number or policy number of your group insurance plan to know what to do.

This number must have between 5 and 10 characters.

Look on your group insurance card. You’ll see your group numbers or group plan policy.

No. Your child must be a full-time student to benefit from the student status and be covered by your plan.

Your child must meet three conditions to be eligible for the student status:

  • Be your dependent.
  • Be a full-time student (4 courses, 12 credits or 180 hours per semester).
  • Attend a recognized educational institution.

Your child can no longer be covered by your plan as soon as they no longer meet one of these conditions, depending on the maximum age indicated in your contract.

The maximum age to benefit from the student status and be covered by your plan can vary. Review your group insurance contract in the Client Centre to find the right information.

Yes! Even though your child is your dependent and covered by your plan, they can also be covered by a second plan. In most cases, we’re talking about a plan offered by their employer or university.

If that is indeed their situation, it’s possible to apply the coordination of benefits during a claim.
